Inspired by a literacy organization known as Laubach Literacy Action located in Syracuse, New York, Harry Chun-Hoon and Myrtle Lee organized a tutoring program in 1971 to teach people in Hawaii how to read. By 1979, Hawaii Literacy had over 80 tutors working with over 250 students. Today, the program has expanded its services to the islands of Oahu, Kauai, and as of June 2015, Kona. Hawaii Literacy's dedicated tutors work with more than 160 students at any given time. In the future, the organization plans to expand into the remaining areas of the state of Hawaii.

The organization's mission is to increase literacy across the state with its Adult Literacy, Bookmobile, English Language Learner, and Family Literacy programs because "greater literacy builds stronger families."

"We believe that literacy is at the core of having the opportunity for a better life, and that it is never too late for an adult to learn to read and write. We believe that well-trained and dedicated volunteers can successfully teach adults to read and write."

Out of Hawaii Literacy's many programs, the Luke Center has decided to focus on the Family Literacy Program. The Family Literacy Program is comprised of two libraries for residents living in Kuhio Park and Mayor Wright Homes. In the libraries, Hawaii Literacy patrons can check out books, participate in story hour and literacy activities, receive homework help, and access computers or ebooks.

Hawaii Literacy is always looking for new volunteers in the Family Libraries because volunteering can make a huge impact on the children's lives. There are various of tasks to complete in the libraries such as leading the story hour, reading to a child, helping with homework, or participating/playing literacy games. In addition, help with cataloging, shelving, organizing books, and preparing for literacy activities is welcomed.

*Note: Hawaii Literacy asks for a minimum commitment of one visit a week for at least four months.
